The App is the cornerstone of autobeacon.

When parents log-in, the app lets them control the whole system. They create an account, add vehicles, add drivers, adjust restriction settings and receive notifications.

When the driver is logged in, the app works with the iPhone bracket and the beacon to prevent cell phone use and analyze information, confirming that your driver is following set restrictions.

iPhone Car Mount

This is where the driver's iPhone is held while the car is being driven.

The bracket is mounted either on the dashboard or on the bottom of the windshield. When the iPhone is horizontal its front-facing camera is approximately in the center of the car.

The driver places the phone into the bracket and the phone remains in the holder until the drive is over.

If the driver doesn't place their phone in the bracket before the drive or removes it while the car is moving you will receive a notification.

Beacon

The beacon is placed anywhere in the front of the car.

The beacon connects to the driver's phone automatically when they approach the car via a non-pairing Bluetooth® connection so autobeacon can tell you who is driving, what car they're driving and if they break any restrictions.

It doesn't matter where the beacon is placed as long as it is within a few feet of the driver.

Good places to attach it are: inside the glovebox, on/in the center console or in the storage box under the arm rest.

iPhone Car Charger

A high-powered iPhone Car charger is included to ensure that the driver's phone is always charged.

Connection to a power source is not necessary for autobeacon to work. We include it to make sure that your driver is always using autobeacon even if their phone runs out of battery.

Connection to a power source is necessary for some hands-free iPhone features.

This charger can also be used to charge the breathalyzer if you choose that option.

Breathalyzer (optional)

The BACtrack Mobile Pro Breathalyzer is included with autobeacon Premium for parents that are concerned that their teen may Drink & Drive.

'Drinking & Driving' prevention lets you create a time period during which your teen has to use the Breathalyzer before driving.

When your child gets into the car during this time period and places their phone into the bracket, the app will automatically direct the driver to use the breathalyzer.

Features

autobeacon keeps your child safe while driving and helps give you peace of mind by updating you on the following features.

Every feature is fully customizable and you can turn any feature on/off at any time.

 Detailed Feature Descriptions

Passenger Restrictions

  • autobeacon determines the number of people in the car by taking a picture of the interior and running that picture through proprietary software that sends you a notification if there are more passengers traveling in the car with your son or daughter than you allow.
  • autobeacon also gives you the option to include a picture of the interior of the car with the notification, so that you can see who is traveling with your son or daughter.

Why this is important

  • 45 out of 50 U.S. States have some form of teen passenger restrictions during the first 2 years of driving. Research has proven that teen passengers present a huge distraction to teen drivers. 5
  • In fact, a AAA research study proved that compared with having no passengers, probability of fatality:
    • Increases by 44% when carrying 1 passenger younger than 21.
    • Doubles when carrying 2 passengers younger than 21.
    • Quadruples when carrying 3+ passengers younger than 21.1
  • Having at least one passenger 35 or older in the vehicle was associated with a 62% decrease in a teen's risk of being killed in a crash, and a 46% decrease of being involved in any police reported crash. autobeacon is the adult in the car, when you can’t be there.1

 Prevent Cell Phone Use

  • autobeacon keeps the phone out of immediate reach of the driver. But perhaps more important, autobeacon prevents use of the driver's smartphone while the car is moving.
    • An emergency call button or the iPhone's 'Home' button can be pressed in the event of an emergency and the driver needs to make a call while the car is moving. If the button is pressed to enter the phone while the car is moving, you will receive a notification.
    • If there is no emergency, in order to make a call or text, the car must come to a complete stop for a few seconds to enable the phone. For example: if the driver wants to change a song at a stop light or pull over to send an important text.
    • autobeacon can be set up to allow hands-free calling if you are comfortable with your driver using this feature. Many states do not allow calling during the first year, even if it is hands-free. It causes mental distractions that may be even more dangerous than physical distractions like not having both hands on the wheel.

    Why this is important

    • Text messaging makes a car accident up to 23 x more likely for all drivers and even more likely for teens. Texting while driving causes:
      • 1.6 Million accidents per year2
      • 330,000 injuries per year3
      • 11 Deaths every day4
      • Nearly 25% of all car accidents.
    • Texting and driving is:
      • About 6 times more likely to cause an accident than drinking and driving
      • The same effect on the average person as driving after 4 beers4
      • The number 1 distraction reported by teen drivers.

    Speeding & Reckless Driving

    • autobeacon lets you create a speed threshold in context to the posted speed limit. For example: 5 mph above the posted speed limit.
    • This helps parents make sure that their driver is behaving safely on all roads with all speed limits.
    • autobeacon knows the posted speed limit by accessing a speed limit database and then uses the database to determine what the speed limit is for the real-time location of your driver. autobeacon then compares the speed limit + your threshold to the driver's current speed.

    Why this is important

    • In recent years, speeding was a factor in more than 50% of fatal crashes with a teen driving.5
    • "When we spoke to teens in focus groups across the country, they defined speeding as “more than 10 miles per hour above posted limits.”
    • "Half told us they drive much faster (or more) over the posted speed limit at least sometimes."8
    • "Think about what effect going 10 mph over the posted speed limit in a residential neighborhood or busy city street could mean for your teen driver. Now consider its effect on a dark, curvy road on a rainy night."8

    Location, Routes and Boundaries

    • autobeacon has various customizable and optional location features, including:
      • Recent Drives - show the driver's entire route on a map with indicated departure and arrival locations and times, distance traveled and other useful information.
      • Location Boundaries - that notify you when the driver arrives at or departs from boundary locations that you create on a map.
        • These location boundaries can be as specific as Home or School or as broad as a State or Town.
        • The boundaries are set by dropping a pin on the map within the app and expanding a circle around the location.
      • Real-time tracking - open the app, hit the refresh button in the top right corner of the home screen and see where your teen is.
    •  All autobeacon features can be turned on if you need them and turned off if you do not—or customized to your specific needs.

    Why this is important

    • The locations where a teen drives do not directly cause or prevent car accidents. However, overall involvement and monitoring during the first few years of driving has been proven to cause significant reductions in dangerous driving and accidents.

     Enforce Seatbelt Use

    • autobeacon uses the camera of your driver's phone and proprietary software to determine if the driver and front seat passenger are wearing their seatbelts.
    • If you are concerned that passengers in the rear are also not wearing their seatbelts, you can choose to get a picture of the interior of the car and see for yourself.

    Why this is important

    • Teens buckle up the least of any age group, and the consequences are deadly. According to a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2013 only 55 percent of high school students reported always wearing a seatbelt when riding with someone else.7
    • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2012 58 percent of young adults (ages 13-20) that died in crashes were not wearing a seat belt.9

     Nighttime Driving

    • autobeacon monitors when your autobeacon enabled car is being driven and who is driving it; you will be notified when your teen driver uses the car after the pre-set curfew.

    Why this is important

    • The fatal crash rate of 16-year olds is nearly twice as high at night.10 Nighttime traffic volume is about half that of daytime volume. However, recent National Safety Council figures show that about 62% of all traffic deaths nationwide occur at night.

     Prevent Excessively Loud Music

    • autobeacon uses  the driver's phone to identify how loud the music is in the car.
    • If it is louder than deemed safe, you will receive a notification.

    Why this is important

    • “Young-novice drivers remain more prone to distraction as they are less efficient in processing visual information needed to drive safely while engaging in other non-driving tasks – such as music listening,” 11
    • Excessively loud music prevents your driver from not-hearing an emergency vehicle's sirens and causing a dangerous situation.
    • Researchers found that 92 percent of participants still made errors, which included speeding, tailgating, careless lane switching, passing vehicles, and one-handed driving, when driving with no music. But when listening to the softer music, errors became 20 percent less likely.12
    • A study conducted by Memorial University in Newfoundland found that no matter what kind of music was played, drivers’ reactions were slower when the volume was high. At 95 decibels (as loud as a power lawnmower), the time needed to make decisions increased by 20 percent.13

    Preventing Drinking and Driving

    • autobeacon offers an optional Drinking & Driving prevention feature that incorporates a BACtrack Mobile Pro Bluetooth Police Grade Breathalyzer.
    • You can require your driver to provide a breath sample every time they drive or only on certain days and times. For example: breathalyzer use may be required between Friday night at 7:00 PM and Sunday morning at 6:00 AM. These settings are up to you.
    • While your driver is using the Breathalyzer, the phone's camera takes a picture so you can ensure that the right person is using the system.

    Why this is important

    • Alcohol involvement in crashes peaks at night (9 pm to 6 am) and is higher on weekends than on weekdays for teens.14
    • Alcohol is a factor in about 1/3 of all teen driving fatalities.
    • 74% of teens killed after DUI were not wearing a seat belt.
    • 22% of teens ride with a driver under the influence of alcohol every month.
    • Vehicular Manslaughter from DUI results in mandatory minimum prison sentences of 3 years in many states, and often more than 3 years.15

    Interior Notification Cam

autobeacon's interior notification camera allows you to select an option to receive a picture of the car's interior include with all notifications.

    This lets you see:

    • Who is in the car?
    • Are seatbelt buckled?
    • If your driver was distracted while breaking a rule or if it was the logical and safe choice in that scenario.

    Why this is important

    • This is important because it gives you more context to your driver’s actions and lets them prove that they can drive safely, even in scenarios that require a notification to be sent.

    DashCam

    • autobeacon's DashCam feature lets you see what happened leading up to an accident.
    • The DashCam feature works by accessing the phone's camera while the phone is in the Car Mount and records all driving while the car is moving.
    • DashCam does not store all of the footage; autobeacon stores the 45 seconds of footage leading up to an event.
    • If there is no event, no footage is stored.

    Why this is important

    • Teens are usually not given the benefit of the doubt in car accidents and it can be easy for an unethical adult to blame an accident on a young driver—even if it was not the young driver's fault.
    • If an accident occurs that is not your teen’s fault, this gives you evidence to protect your child.
